2007 HS State Soccer Tournament

Mater Dei girls' soccer team made its own luck!

Center Grove wins Semi State!

Mater Dei Falls in Semi State

Columbus North Wins 2-0

By: Nicholas Romain/dls staff writer

Mater Dei's Lady Cats seemed to have nine lives during the entire tournament, but their luck ran out today as the Cats fell to a solid Columbus North team 2-0. Mater Dei had played the entire tournament with a lot of team spirit and energy, but that seem to be lacking in the second half of the game as the North squad made a number of uncontested runs at the goal...only getting 2 shots on goal, but eating up the clock with each advance of the ball! The Northern bunch then packed-it-in defensively once they had recorded a 2-0 lead, making it difficult for the Mater Dei offense to move the ball.  Mater Dei wraps up a great season with a 16-4-2 record.  Columbus North moves on to play Center Grove (winners 5-0 over Jasper) in the final for the right to go to State.

Beats Harrison 2-1

Well, they did come to play...and both teams did play hard, but Mater Dei is moving on and Harrison wraps up what was a season of growth.  Both teams are fairly young but grew up a lot over the long season.   Mater Dei has used a stellar passing game to keep it's opponents at bay thus far into the tournament, but will be tested this weekend against a strong Columbus North team that is 20-1-1.  Mater Dei improved it's record to 16-3-2 on the year.  Harrison finishes the season at 13-7-1.

Mater Dei/Harrison to Battle it out for Regional

Mater Dei just before Reitz game

It will be a photographers dream, lots of red and yellow to shoot (they show up well)...it will also be a dream for many of these girls on both teams that were over-shadowed all year by Reitz and Memorial (both great teams).  Mater Dei fought hard against a great Reitz team and is playing it's best soccer, just when it counts the most!  Harrison, on the other hand, has been playing great defense and had a tougher draw than Mater Dei (outside of Reitz) and seems focused to move on.  If Mater Dei lets the Harrison forwards score early, it will be gameover, so Mater Dei must play it's best defense as well...this could be a 0-0 game going into PK's...in any case, congrats to the Mater Dei and Harrison girls programs, both young, and with perhaps less overall talent than Reitz or Memorial, but "rose above the challenge" when the games started!  Game time is 6pm @ DC Field.

It certainly wasn't by script, but if you would have told me that both Reitz, ranked # 2 in the State, and Memorial, ranked #14, would both lose in the first round of sectional games....well, I would have bet my car against it...but, that is exactly what happened on Monday Night.  First,  Harrison Warriors, unranked, knocked off a very good Memorial team 1-0 on a goal by Lavonia Lewis.  Lewis took a pass from Kori Pope and got behind the Memorial defense to send Harrison into game two.
